Gergely Szots was born on the 18th December 1981. He works in financial management when he is not officiating in a match. He took his refereeing badge before working his way through the lower leagues of Budapest football, where he gained experience. His rise continued with him refereeing in division three games and youth matches. His good performances gained him recognition, and he was in control of his first divison two game in 2008, when Dunaujvaros faced Baja. Szots also officiated last season's Hungarian cup, second leg game, on the 14th March 2012, when a goal from Vidi's Perics gave the red and blues a 1-0 win at Győr. Szots was also the referee in Vidi's 2-0 league cup win at Zalaegerszeg, with the goals coming from Tar and Vachtler that day.
