MTK manager Jozsef Garami said in the build up to Tuesday's Hungarian cup, semi-final, second leg tie that his side would not give up the hope, and asked his players to do their thing on the pitch. Well his young MTK side did not disappoint as they overturned a 3-2 first leg defeat to win the second leg 2-0 at the Sostoi stadium, resulting in a 4-3 aggregate win and progression in to the Hungarian cup final to face the winners of the Ujpest - Debrecen semi-final tie. Manager Paulo Sousa fielded a strong starting line up, but as so many times is the case in cup football, surprises happen all the time. Very few both inside the Sostoi stadium, and those watching live on TV would have predicted this result. Videoton had gone in 2-0 down at half time in the first leg at the Hidegkuti stadium, only for the red and blues to hit three second half goals to win 3-2. However, a repeat did not happen second time around, despite MTK once again leading 2-0 at the break. It was to prove a frustrating second half for the Szekesfehervar side.
Nikolics had the first real chance of the game after 4 minutes when his shot was held by keeper Hegedus. Sandor then shot at goal, which the visiting keeper was equal to, before Nikolics shot wide a minute later. Zsidai had a weak shot at goal saved by Bozovics in what was the visitors first effort. MTK suddenly took the lead on 21 minutes with a Kanta goal. His free kick found the top right corner to put MTK back in the tie. MTK doubled their lead, when Tischler met Konyves' ball to make it 2-0 on the night right on the half hour mark.
The 38th minute saw Nikolics receive a lovely ball only to find the post as MTK escaped danger. Brachi then sprinted for a ball only to suddenly pull up with an injury. The right back was forced to come off in the 41st minute, being replaced by Sandor Torghelle. Konyves then had a shot go across the face of the goal in the final chance of a frustrating first half. MTK lined up with a back line of 5 in the second half. Nikolics and Torghelle were working hard to create things up front but MTK defended with determination to clear the danger. Torghelle's header from a Walter cross on 57 minutes was saved well by Hegedus. Sandor then shot wide a minute later after beating Kanta to the ball. Three MTK players then received yellow cards inside 3 minutes as the visitors struggled to hold their discipline.
Vinicius did find the back of the net for Vidi on 66 minutes, only to be ruled offside by referee Farkas. It was the second offside decision to go against Vidi, as Nikolics had earlier had a goal ruled out. Tischler then received his marching orders for his second yellow after clashing with Caneira. Nikhazi then fouled Walter after 81 minutes, and the Spanish winger reacted back resulting in both being sent off by the busy match official.
Nikolics managed to get in behind the MTK defence several times but was caught offside more than once. MTK then defended in numbers trying to preserve their 2-0 lead. Big pressure from Videoton failed to find a way past Hegedus and his defenders, as the visitors held out to go through to the Hungarian cup final, on what was a very frustrating night at the Sostoi stadium.
