Hungary lose 4-0 at home to Holland

Sandor Egervari included two Videoton players in his starting line up

Hungary found themselves on the end of a 4-0 scoreline at the Puskas Ferenc stadium in Budapest, on Friday evening. This European championship qualifying match saw Hungary have very little opportunity in front of the Dutch goal.

In front of a crowd of over 22,000, Hungary never really got going, and the fact that Holland scored a quick opening goal did not help things. National team manager Sandor Egervari named Zoltan Liptak in central defence, with Akos Elek playing in central midfield. Pal Lazar, the final member of the Vidi trio, had to settle for a place on the bench, and was not used during the game. Holland looked composed on the ball, as you would expect from last years world cup finalists. The Hungarians went into the match in second place in group E, behind leaders Holland.

Egervari chose to play Videoton defender Zoltan Liptak alongside Roland Juhasz at the back. Akos Elek was one of the better performers, in a Hungarian side that found it hard to keep up with Holland. Goals from Van der Vaart, Afellay, the hard working Kuyt, and Arsenal forward Van Persie did the damage. The Dutch midfield proved too strong and the good movement and inter-linking play was another major difference between the two sides. This defeat brought to an end a run of five consecutive wins for the Hungarian side, who will be eager to do better in the upcoming group matches with Sweden, Finland and Moldova.

Hungary will now travel to Amsterdam for Tuesday evening's match. Games like these will only help develop Akos Elek's game further, and in the long run, that will do him no harm. Hopefully Hungary will be able to quickly get this defeat out of their system and continue their recent good run, which had seen them move up the FIFA world rankings.
