Videoton top the table after 9 matches
The international break is a good opportunity to look back at the season so far. Videoton currently top the Soproni league division one table, after nine games, having won their last four matches in a row. The pre-season campaign saw manager Gyorgy Mezey take his squad over to Austria for a series of friendly matches, as they looked to prepare for the Europa League two-legged affair with Slovenian side NK Maribor. Vidi were very busy in the transfer market bringing in winger Andras Gosztonyi, defender Tamas Vasko, midfielder Dusan Vasziljevics, goalkeeper Mladen Bozsovics, while Martin Mutumba and Bojan Djordjic both arrived from Swedish side AIK Solna.
The club also took steps to improve the Sostoi stadium, which included a completely new pitch and improvements to the VIP and Media section. 3,000 seats were also installed at the ground, making it an all seater stadium in the process. The new pitch meant that the ground was not ready to stage the Europa League first leg match with Maribor, and that was duly switched to nearby Győr, where the two sides played out a 1-1 draw. A Gabor Horvath goal gave Vidi a chance of going through in the away leg in Slovenia. However, despite a great turn out from Vidi's fans, it was not to be as NK Maribor won 2-0 to go through 3-1 on aggregate. The league season kicked off with an away trip to Balaton side, Siofok. A mistake from keeper Bozsovics, meant that Vidi picked up a point, with their goal coming from Goran Vujovics. Things improved the following week with the first win of the season against Vasas. The 3-0 scoreline was a sign of what was to come, as goals from Elek, Alves and Vujovics did the damage. It was also the first game played on the brand new pitch, which was much needed after years of bad quality pitches at the Sostoi stadium.
New international manager Sandor Egervari was installed and he called up a trio of Vidi players to the senior squad. Right back Pal Lazar, together with Zoltan Liptak and Akos Elek all received international caps. In fact both Elek and Liptak were the best performers when Hungary lost 2-1 to England at Wembley. Videoton followed up their 3-0 home win over Vasas with a 3-0 away win at in form side MTK. Andre Alves hit a double, while new signing Dusan Vasziljevics was also on target to take Vidi to the top of the table. Managing Director Sandor Berzi left the club to take up a new role as Vice-President of the Hungarian FA, and his position went to Mark Tassy. Ferencvaros were next up as the well supported Budapest side visited Fehervar. The visitors were the better side in the first half and even took the lead. However, Vidi fought back to level the game with a goal from substitute Nikolics, in front of almost 8,000 fans. The home supporters had made it a carnival atmosphere as they greeted their side onto the pitch, with confetti and streamers.
