Videoton will face a two-legged affair with NK Maribor

Videoton's first opponents in the Europa league will be against top Slovenian side NK Maribor.

Videoton's opponents are a prestigious and successful club, with an impressive history dating back to their foundation on the 28th June 1919. They were first known as SSK Maribor. Following the end of the Second World War, they competed in the Yugoslavian first division, first under the name of FB Maribor, before changing their name to Branik Maribor. They were not especially successful and had to compete with their southern neighbours including the Serbian Partizan side adn Crvena zvezda, as well as Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. The club have been under their present name since 1960.

Independence brought many changes and NK Maribor have gone on to become the most successful side in Slovenia. Their main opponents are the team from the capital, OIimpija Ljubljana. NK Maribor have won the domestic title eight times, which includes seven in a row, between the years 1997 and 2003. It is interesting to note that there are similarities between our opponents and Videoton. The Slovenian side also had there own financial problems during 2004-2008. They did not manage to finish in a position higher than third during those years.

It is also worth noting that the Slovenian side have experience in European football, which has also seen them as the only side in their country to have played Champions League football. It was back in 1999-2000 season that NK Maribor qualified for the Champions League group stage. They were drawn in a tough group that included Dinamo Kiev, Bayern Leverkusen and Lazio. They even managed to win defeating the Ukrainian side 1-0 in Maribor.

Last summer they ended up as competing in the qualification stage of the Champions League, and beat Georgian side WIT Georgia. However, Swiss side FC Zurich proved to tough for them. Maribor ended their domestic league in second place. The club's Director of Football is Zlatko Zahovic, who is a well-known figure within European football. He was capped 80 times for his country, and was a midfielder for Partizan Belgrade, FC Porto, Olympiakos, Valencia and Benfica. He was also a member of the Slovenian side that played in the 2000 European championships.

Their present squad includes two players who were out in the World Cup in South Africa. They are defenders Elvedin Dzinic and Suad Filekovic. They also include Brazilian player Marcos Taveras in their side as well as Dejan Skolnik. The latter was named player of the year last season.
