Last seasons excellent performance when the team achieved a 3rd place finish and also won the Hungarian cup, meant that expectations were high going into the 2006-2007 season. The first sign of difficulty came before the season started. The Hungarian FA did not accept the licence for the season ahead. That was resolved within two weeks. Further worrying developments followed with owner Laszlo Szieben wishing to sell his 80% stake in the club. There were rumours that the club management did not wish to proceed with manager Aurel Csertoi. However, the management denied these rumours.
Crowd favourite arrives and also departs
One of the clubs big favourites arrived back to Szekesfehervar during the summer. Brazilian midfielder Julinho Cesar delighted the supporters when he came back. Further arrivals included Lajos Terjek and midfielder Peter Finta. Keeper Daniel Tudor departed Fehervar while David Disztl and Norbert Bartyik moved to Honved on loan deals.
Short rest - quick pre-season – Super cup and UEFA Cup
With European football awaiting the players in the summer of 2006, that meant a short rest and pre-season than perhaps was possibly needed. The first days of July included two friendly matches with a 7-2 win over Felcsut and a 2-1 win at Dunaujvaros.
Fehervar faced 2005-2006 league champions Debrecen in the final of the super cup. The team from the east of Hungary won both legs to lift the cup. With almost a month having passed since the end of the previous league season, first round opponents in the UEFA Cup were FC Kairat Almaty, which Fehervar won 1-0 in the home leg. Fehervar lost the second leg in Kazakhstan 2-1, but the away goals rule meant a place in the next round.
The second round draw paired the club with Swiss side FC Grasshoppers. Everyone knew that the team from Switzerland would provide a much tougher test. The home leg ended in a 1-1 draw with Fehervar going out in the second leg after a 2-0 defeat.
Indifferent performance - change of manager
The autumn season started poorly with a 3-2 defeat at home to ZTE followed by a 2-1 loss at Sopron. Only a point was picked up in the draw against Pecs. The first win came in week 4 of the season. That came with a 2-0 win at Paks and Vasas were also beaten by two goals. A painful defeat was next away at Debrecen. That meant just 3 wins from the first 10 league games of the season.
A bad defeat to Gyirmot in the first round of the Hungarian cup resulted in the management of the club breaking up the contract with Aurel Csertoi. A couple of player also departed the club with their contracts being terminated. The new man in charge was named as Marijan Vlak and he brought with him assistant Hrvoje Braovic. Coaches remained in the form of Tibor Ulbert and Zoltan Nemeth. The introduction of the new management team started well with a 1-0 win over MTK, which was followed up by a similar 1-0 win away at MTK. There was a further win against DVTK and a real battling performance at Ujpest, which saw Fehervar come out on top 3-2.
Fehervar ended the autumn season in 5th place, but the Hungarian FA decided to play the first two fixtures of the spring season at the back end of the autumn one and the end of 2006. A weakend side lost 2-1 to ZTE, but the year ended with a 3-1 win over Sopron.
Not only were there changes to the playing squad
It became evident that Marian Vlak would make changes to his coaching team. The first days of January saw the departure of coach Zoltan Nemeth and goalkeeping coach Tibor Ulbert. Peter Disztl took charge and started to coach the keepers at the club.
There were contract extensions for Attila Kuttor and keeper Zsolt Sebok. Youth player Peter Lelkes was promoted to the first team squad. A total of 3 new players joined the club over the winter break. All three came in from Budapest club Honved. Central defender Tibor Baranyai and Attila Meszaros made the switch, while Adam Csobanki signed a deal with the club. Forward Gabor Vayer also joined having previously played for Győr and lower league sides in Portugal.
There were four players that left the club during the winter of 2007. FC Fehervar broke up contracts with Tamas Gyorok. Csaba Csizmadia moved to Austrian club Mattersburg. Illes Sitku joined Turkish club Ankaraspor. Forward Peter Finta made the short move over to Haladas.
Pre-season at home and in Turkey
The first friendly game was played in very cold conditions and heavy snow. However, those supporters that turned out saw their side win 3-1 against Siofok. There was a goaless draw with Dunaszerdahely that followed as well as a 1-1 draw with Alba Regia.
The Turkish training camp started with a defeat. Romanian side Pandur won 2-0 and there was a 1-0 loss to South Korean club. The pre-season period ended with a 4-0 win over DAC.
The team doesn't gel too quickly
The first game of the second half of the season was played at the home of Pecs. A poor performance resulted in a 2-0 defeat. There wasn't too many bright periods over the spring season for the supporters. A 1-1 draw with Paks and a 2-2 draw against Vasas was followed by a 2-1 defeat against Kaposvar. A weak Vac side were beaten 2-0 but there was another loss to league leaders Debrecen by a 4-0 scoreline. Tatabanya took the points in their 3-2 home win over Fehervar.
The next win only came at the end of April! That was a game full of goals and a 5-3 win over MTK at the Sostoi stadium. Ferenc Horvath left the club during the season but the playing licence of Peter Simek eventually arrived after a long wait. The final game of the spring was a good 2-1 win at Győr and a 2-0 success over Ujpest. The season closing fixture ended in a 2-2 draw with Fehervar having led by two goals during the match. Three players had to leave the pitch with injuries, which proved costly. The week spring performance saw Fehervar close the 2006-07 season in 6th place with 44 points.
