Promotion back to the first division also meant important changes to the management of the club. Outgoing Laszlo Berces was replaced by vice Mayor Peter Fenyves as the President of the club. Managing Director was Matyas Dosa and Director of Sport Istvan Szigli. Endre Varga was named Technical Manager. It appeared as though the financial problems had settled down with the local council helping out. They had a 90% share of the club as they went into the new season. It had been decided before the season had began that Janos Csank would not be the team manager. His place went to Ferenc Csongradi who was assisted by Sandor Csato.

The team needed strengthening again

Defender Csaba Szalai joined Vidi as did Balazs Hompoth and keeper Bela Biro. There were several forwards who also linked up with the Fehervar side during that summer. They included Jozsef Havran from Vac, Gabor Foldes from Siofok and Zoltan Csehi from Hajduszoboszlo. Romanian Nicolae Ilea arrived in a loan deal from MTK. Another player to make the switch from MTK was midfielder Krisztian Csillag in another loan deal. Balazs Toth and Kornel Trampler moved up from the youth set up.

There were plenty of departures from the football club. Gabor Nemeth and defender Marius Cheregi continued their careers at Ferencvaros. The club broke up contracts with striker Istvan Kiss and defender Zsolt Kellner. Tamas Gyorok and Gabor Fesu moved to Veszprem.

New structure for the season ahead

There was a new structure to the league with 12 teams competing in an "A" and "B" league. Vidi kicked off in the B section.

The season started with a 2-0 win at Nagykanizsa. A 2-2 draw with Vasas was next up as the season continued. The 4th August saw the visit of Ujpest to the Sostoi. That resulted in a 4-1 defeat after not being able to convert the chances that came Vidi's way. Things improved a week later at the home of ZTE with a 4-1 win and goals coming from Foldes (2), Gaspar and Levai.

The form continued to be indifferent as the team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Debrecen. A 1-0 loss against Nagykanizsa and a 3-1 defeat to MTK followed. At the same time there were wins over Pecs 2-0 and 1-0 over Vasas. There were also 2 draws against Ujpest and ZTE. Pecs and MTK were also beaten.

That gave Vidi a 5th place finish and a chance to compete in the 12 team Borsodi league from the first week of November.

Changes to the squad

The management agreed that strengthening was needed and new players arrived. Peter Balassa came in from Debrecen. Striker Ruszlan Csernijenko was another new face as was defender Balazs Kiskapusi and forward Attila Korsos from Ujpest. Midfielder Daniel Usvat arrived from Nagykanizsa and defender Dejan Vilotics from Spartak Subotica.

Several players were loaned out to Siofok including defender Zsolt Hosnyánszky and forward Jozsef Havran, midfielder Tamas Bany and Sandor Gyurovath all moved to the Balaton club. The first game was a big one against Ferencvaros, which ended in a 0-0 draw. That was a realistic result and something to build upon. A surprise was in order as Videoton travelled to Vasas and came away with the points thanks to a 2-0 win. Yet more points were picked up in the 3-1 win over Debrecen and a 2-1 win against ZTE. The first setback came in week 5 of the season when Vidi were beaten 2-1 at the home of Győri ETO.

Vidi went into the spring season in 5th place.

Winning start - another change of management

There were several arrivals during the winter window. Julinho was signed from Friburguense of Brazil, CF Zico player Leo also arrived to Fehervar. Midfielder Attila Kovacs joined from Tatabanya and Ferencvaros forward Rob Kornel also signed on the dotted line.

Departures included forward Zoltan Csehi to FC Bihor, Papa signed defender Tamas Csordas, ZTE brought in Tamas Udvari. Krisztian Csillag returned back to MTK after his loan period ended. Nicolae Cornel moved to Nyirseg Spartacus. The second half of the season kicked off with a match against Tatabanya. Vidi won the game 1-0 with the goal coming from a penalty. A 2-1 loss to MTK was next up for the red and blues while almost 8000 were inside the stadium for the match with Ujpest. Vidi defended well in the first half, but the sending off of Zoltan Szelesi played a part in Vidi running out 4-0 winners in the second half. Goals that day came from Julinho (2), Nemeth and Csernijenko. That saw Vidi jump up to third in the league table.

A 2-1 defeat to Sopron followed as the team suffered indifferent form. That included a 5-0 defeat to Ferencvaros, which eventually cost Ferenc Csongradi his job as manager. The management of the club did not take too long to name his successor with Peter Varhidi being appointed. The former Ujpest boss signed the contract and took his place in the dugout.

There was no magic ingredient in the first match with Vidi losing 3-2 to Vasas. The first win came in week 30 of the season against Győri ETO and that win helped Videoton climb out of the relegation place. Several players were missing due to injury and suspension, but the three points were deserved. There were two further wins over Tatabanya 3-1 and MTK 1-0. The 3 wins were followed by three defeats to Ujpest, Dunaferr and Sopron. Although the team avoided relegation with Debrecen drawing with Honved and Debrecen ended up joining Tatabanya and Lombard FC in the second division.

The final game of the season was against Honved. A good 4-1 win was a fitting way to end the season. The team finished with 33 points and 9 wins, together with the 2 draws and 11 defeats. That produced an 8th place finish for Videoton FC.

A place in the final of the Hungarian cup

The fine autumn performance resulted in the team entering the cup at a later stage. The first game was against Nyirseg Spartacus and a 2-1. The quarterfinals was against Vasas, which ended in a 2-0 win and a place in the semi-finals. BKV Elore were the opponents and they were also beaten 1-0 to earn a place in the final of the cup.

There were 10,000 present at the Ulloi ut for the Hungarian cup final. Nearly 19 years had passed since Videoton last made it into the final, which this time was against Debrecen. The first half was a fairly even affair but the second half was much worse. Manager Peter Varhidi only had 3 defenders at his disposal and he was unable to make changes. Debrecen would go on to win 5-2 and lift the cup.

A szurkolók 15 órakor indulnak 2000. Január 01.
A Videoton FCF Baráti Kör Egyesület szervezésében különvonat, illetve szurkolói buszok indulnak a Magyar Kupa döntőjére. A járatok indulási ideje egységesen 15 óra. Az autóbuszok a Piac-térről először a Sóstói stadionba mennek, ahol csatlakoznak az utánpótlás csapatokat szállító buszokhoz, s együtt folytatják majd útjukat. A különvonat 14 órakor áll majd be a vasútállomás 1-es vágányára, ezért a szervezők kérnek mindenkit, hogy legkésőbb 14,30-ig érkezzenek meg a szerelvényhez. A vonat érkezési ideje Ferencváros állomásra 16,07, a visszaindulás a mérkőzés alakulásától függően lesz.
