Videoton are in the second division but do very well and pick up over 100 points!


The management of the club decided that they would not extend the contract of manager Jozsef Verebes. They turned to Janos Csank to take over the first team. The former international manager was interested in the chance, but admitted he was not too keen to take charge of a team in the second division. However, he also mentioned that Vidi was not your average second division team. Finally Csank signed a one year deal with the football club. Laszlo Vass came in as coach while Peter Disztl was asked to become goalkeeping coach.
Major changes to the squad
The club started with a 25 man squad with plenty of changes in the playing staff.
Arrival: Endre Gaspar and Peter Lendvai - III Kerulet FC, Sandor Csato and Tibor Fodor from Győri ETO. Keeper Gabor Nemeth from Haladas and forward Tamas Nemeth from ZTE. Defenders: Andras Levai and Tamas Udvari from Vac. Krisztian Csaszar returned to the club from Gazszer FC.
Departures: Lajos Nagy to ZTE, Istvan Kozma and Gyula Zsivoczky to Tatabanya. Defender Attila Kuttor returned to MTK. Forward Akos Barva to Csakvar, defender Csaba Laszlo went to Bodajk. Veszprem signed Krisztian Mikoczi and midfielder Vladan Filipovics went to Diosgyőr. Zsolt Mariasi headed to a lower league side in Austria.
Winning start to the second division
The season started on the 1st August with a game against Erdi. Several wins were picked up in the matches that followed, which saw the team head the league table. Videoton met Sopron is a table topping match with Vidi by then enjoying a 5 points lead. The game ended in a win with the deciding goal coming from Zalan Zombori.
Points were dropped away at BKV Elore in the 1-1 draw but the autumn season came to a sudden end with heavy snow and the final two games being postponed until the spring.
Further changes to the squad and a good start to the spring
There were fewer arrivals over the winter. However, Tamas Bany came in from Kaposvar and Sandor Gyurovath from Komarom FC. Istvan Sipeki arrived from Vac as did Marius Cheregi from FC Brasv.
Midfielder Csaba Horvath returned from his loan spell to MTK. Miklos Vancsa and Attila Toth moved to Kecskemet while Balazs Bobory headed to Dunaferr. Ferenc Roth and Robert Waltner linked up with ZTE and Ujpest respectfully. There was a friendly game with first division leaders Dunaferr. The home side did not field their strongest team and Vidi won 3-1.
The march continues
Late payments of salary resulted in several players reporting the club. However, the local council came to the help of the football club and gave a loan to make sure the spring season would continue.
Further wins meant that by week 18 of the season, Vidi enjoyed a 12 points lead over second place Sopron. REAC were comfortably beaten 8-0 as the goals and points kept on coming. There were 5000 present to see a top of the table clash between Videoton and Bekescsaba. The visitors missed several first half chances and they were punished as they tired in the second half and Vidi ran out winners.
The first defeat of the spring came against Szolnok and a 3-1 loss. However, it did not put Vidi off their track and a point was collected in the 1-1 draw with Sopron. A win would have secured automatic promotion back to the top division but Vidi had to wait a little further. The club prepared to celebrate against BKV but there were several poor displays from the players and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The second division was clinched with a massive lead at the top. The 38 games produced 32 wins and 5 draws with just one defeat. That meant 101 points at the season end!
Hungarian cup - Vidi go out against Veszprem
A tactical Veszprem side proved too big a barrier for the men from Fehervar who exited the cup following a 1-0 scoreline. The win saw Veszprem make it into the final 16 of the cup.
