Season in review: 1983-84

A much better season and Jozsef Szabo ends up being top goalscorer.

There was a change of manager ahead of season 1983-84. Ferenc Molnar departed and Ferenc Kovacs returned back to Videoton FC. He had already enjoyed a good stint as manager earlier on and his choice was a popular one. There were further changes to the management of the football club. Istvan Bencsik left his post as club President and his place went to Matyas Dosa. There was not too many changes made to the playing squad although defender Sandor Baranyi left together with forward Janos Zsinka and Mihalics.

A good pre-season is followed by a decent autumn

The team took part in the Intertoto cup once again. Czech side Cheb, Polish outfit Cracovia and Austrians Sturm Graz were all paired in Vidi's group. The 6 matches resulted in 5 wins for the red and blues to get top spot in the group. Jozsef Szabo performed very well and scored six goals including 4 against Cracovia.

The team did very well over the autumn season under Kovacs. The autumn kicked off with a 1-0 loss away at ZTE. However, Volan were easily beaten 5-0, with two goals each from Szabo and Novath. Ferenc Horvath scored the final goal in the 85th minute.

There was a big game in week 8 of the season: The top two sides came face-to-face with Honved having a side that was full of internationals. Naturally Vidi could have no complaints as their side included notable players such as Disztl, Csuhaj, Csongradi and Majer who were all international players at that point.

Many were surprised to see Videoton end the autumn in top spot. The 15 games had brought 9 wins, 4 draws and just 2 losses. A total of 28 goals were scored with just 10 being conceded. The home record was even more impressive with the 8 games seeing 20 goals being scored and just 3 going in at the other end. A total of 7 games were won at the Sostoi. 1983 ended with Jozsef Szabo heading the goalscoring chart with 8.

Third place and top goalscorer

Spring started with a slight knock back. There was a 1-0 win over ZTE, but the team suffered a loss of form and lost the next 5 games! Volan won 3-0 and in what was one of the most important games of the spring, Raba ETO came out on top with their 2-1 win. Further defeats to Haladas 3-0. MTK and SZEOL 1-0 each meant the team now found themselves in fourth place with 24 points. There were now 7 points between Vidi and top of the table Budapest Honved.

The next win came in week 22 and a home match with Tatabanya. Szabo hit a 4th minute opener and a double strike from Majer gave Vidi a 3-0 win. There was a 2-1 loss away at Csepel and that was followed up by a 1-1 draw with Nyiregyhaza. The fortunes improved with Videoton being the better side in the last 6 matches.

The final game of the season was at home against Ferencvaros. There was a lot to play for as a win would mean 3rd place. Jozsef Szabo scored after 30 minutes and that was enough to get the points. The overall record was 37 points from the 16 wins, 5 draws and 9 defeats.

Szabo finished the season as top goalscorer with 19 goals during an impressive season. He was also the first Vidi player to be the top scorer for a season in the country.

Short run in the MNK Cup

The team did not make it into the last 16 of the cup. There was a 3-0 win over Tamasi and a 2-1 victory against Kaposvar. However, Siofok came out the better in the 1-0 win to go through.
